German Chocolate Cake
My favorite cake! This recipe was from the Baker’s German Chocolate wrapper about 50 years ago! They are still making the same chocolate, but believe the included recipe may have changed just ever so slightly over the years.

Even if you don't like coconut, you will love this cake. Top with Coconut pecan frosting (separate recipe).

Ingredients
- 1 4 ounce package Baker's German sweet chocolate
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 cup butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 4 large egg whites stiffly beaten
Instructions
- Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool.
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each. Blend in vanilla and chocolate.
- Sift flour with soda and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating after each addition until smooth
- Fold in beaten whites.
- Pour into 3 8- or 9-inch layer pans lined on bottoms with waxed paper. Bake 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.
- Top each layer with coconut pecan frosting.
